These bowls are perfect for storing anything from stationary, mobile phones and keys to bread, fruits and vegetables. We also like to hang them on the plain wall as art decoration. However you use these bowls, they stay beautiful, displaying the grace, strength and creativity of our artisans.

Story Behind:

Nestled in a tranquil corner of Kigali, a charming community of skilled women artisans with disabilities gather to create delicate handcrafted basketry items. Using locally sourced sisal, they carefully and mindfully weave, stitch, and create each item with meticulous attention to detail. Through this community,  they have not only found a path to financial independence but also achieved social integration and gained self-confidence while finding solace and strength in each other by sharing their similar experience and challenges. The work they produce is not merely functional but is a powerful reflection of their remarkable resilience and humanity. We invite you to explore our collection and discover the beauty and human connection. By purchasing from Kaikô, not only will you acquire a one-of-a-kind, artisanal piece, but you will also contribute to the empowerment and well-being of these inspirational Rwandan women and their communities.

The Ocean bowl was designed by Honorine.

Rwandan Artisan Woman Handweaving Basket I Kaikô I Sustainable Arrisan-Made Interiors

Peace, Hope & Pride Woven in Pieces of Art

Basketry weaving has a long and intricate history and has been an important cultural and social part of Rwandan society. Traditionally, women of the Tutsi aristocratic group wove basketry items showcasing exceptionally fine craftsmanship. After the 1994 genocide that destroyed the country and left the population with 70 per cent women, basketry weaving added a new meaning to Rwandan society. It serves as an important tool for survivors, most of them women, to promote forgiveness and cultivate healing, build self-confidence, and become financially independent.

Love them

These multifunctional baskets are wonderful, combining practicality and beauty. They are made with care and love for detail. I enjoy seeing them hanging in my kitchen and think of those great women who have made them.

So unique, and beautiful

I was very impressed by the colour combination, very chic! it’s not a typical colourful African basket which you find in other shops. It’s very robust, tightly woven and heavy-weight. I shall collect other motifs too! I also like that I can see who wove those items. It is very rare to feature each individual artisan woman. Thank you!
