Artisans are not just craft makers, but successors of culture and history. They are also inspiring role models of a sustainable lifestyle. In times of mass production and mass consumption, we are losing traditional craftsmanship, indigenous culture and nature. Kaikô’s mission is to cast a spotlight on our incredible artisan makers and the stories behind them to rekindle appreciation and respect for people, culture and nature.

Cambodia

Our Cambodian partner was founded in order for artisan women to earn dignified income, and for the ancient Khmer art form to survive. The artisan women handloom textiles in Phnom Srok, a rural district in north-western Cambodia where populations mostly pursue agricultural activities and the families are among the poorest in Cambodia.

They have been growing gradually and today employ over 60 female artisans with century-old traditional craft skills. All of them produce textiles on looms beneath their homes, allowing them to continue to care for their children in a safe, familiar environment.

Our artisan partner also supports female education with the aim to break the cycle of extreme poverty. Together with our partner, Kaikô thrives to make a positive impact on on an individual and community level.

Rwanda

Our Rwandan artisan partner was founded in 2015 with the mission to help Rwandan women with disabilities gain new skills, confidence, and a place in the job market using traditional basketry weaving skills.

With the vision for a world where people with disabilities are self-confident, economically independent, and valued as contributing members in Rwanda, they provide vocational training, English classes and art therapy. The NGO has been successfully growing and today employs over 80 women who proudly continue to improve their skills.

Education is the most critical to end poverty and enhance one’s prosperity. Therefore, our Rwandan partner provides funds and materials for the children of the artisans as well as children with disabilities to go to school. The financial support of 30 euro per month makes it possible for a child to continue going to school. Together with our partner, Kaikô aims to support the further education of the children in need.
